This is going to be the worst weekend for movies so far this year.
There are three movies getting a wide release: “The Eye” with Jessica Alba, “Strange Wilderness,” and “Over Her Dead Body” with Eva Longoria-Parker.
I’m going to see OHDB to review it tonight, and if I had my choice, I’d just sit around and play “Rock Band” instead.
However, my journalistic duties spur me on to go and take in the artistic merits of this surely to be wonderful cinematic experience.
Ugh.
In other news, you may have heard that Peter Jackson is producing, but not directing, two movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” the prequel to “The Lord of the Rings.”
The rumor currently making the rounds is that Guillermo del Toro, the Mexican visual wizard who made “Hellboy” and the upcoming sequel, and the phenomenal “Pan’s Labyrinth,” will be directing the movies. Del Toro has proven that he can direct fantasy and create visual wonderment like no other filmmaker working today, and I would absolutely love to see his interpretation of Tolkien’s initial foray into Middle Earth.
As exciting as this is, the bummer of it is that if he takes the job directing “The Hobbit,” he would likely not be able to direct the two movies based on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” for which he was in heavy consideration.
Asking whether I’d prefer to see a del Toro-helmed “Hobbit” or “Harry Potter” is like asking if I’d prefer a private jet filled with Skittles and bikini models or a yacht loaded down with Reese’s Pieces and CMU volleyball players and gymnasts. They’re both too awesome to choose.
However, I would’ve loved to see del Toro direct “The Order of the Phoenix.” Doug Jones would’ve ended up in the role of Bellatrix LeStrange, I would bet my hat on it.
